Beyoncé’s
Cowboy Carter
tour might have come to an end, but the unexpected Destiny’s Child reunion we witnessed on stage was a parting gift years in the making.
The singer sent the Las Vegas arena into meltdown mode when she announced the arrival of Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams on stage with; “It’s Destiny’s Child bitch!” – and in matching gold chaps, no less.
Seeing out the final moments of the monumental world tour as a trio, the iconic girl group performed a medley of some of their most famous songs, including
Lose My Breath
and
Bootylicious
, before taking on Beyoncé’s
Renaissance
hit (and viral fan challenge),
Energy
, together.
The special moment marked their first performance since surprising fans with a guest appearance during
Beyoncé’s history-making Coachella
set in 2018, and, their first time singing
Bootylicious
on stage together since the
2013 halftime show
.
Is Destiny’s Child Reuniting?
While the reunion unlocked some core 90s memories for most (this writer included), it also sent the Beyhive buzzing with rumours of a possible Destiny’s Child reunion. And now that the singer has reached the end of her
years-long touring schedule
, dashing any remaining
hopes of an Australian leg
along with it, it wouldn’t exactly be out of the realm of possibility.
After all, we know that Beyoncé fans are still awaiting the star’s promised
ACT III
, which most of the internet
thinks
will be coming sometime in 2026, with subsequent touring dates following the year after.
In theory, that
would
create a tidy opening in 2028 to coincide with the 30th anniversary of the group’s self-titled debut album,
Destiny’s Child
, first released in 1998. Whether coincidence, or conjecture, it’s not going to stop us embracing our delusion for as long as possible.
Why Did Destiny’s Child Break Up?
If we’re getting technical, Destiny’s Child never actually officially “broke up”, instead the group (in its final iteration) disbanded in 2006.
At the time, most conjecture stemmed from Beyoncé’s burgeoning solo career and whispers of favouritism from the band’s manager (and Knowles’ father) Mathew Knowles, but their separation also coincided with a more general disbandment of pop groups worldwide.
Releasing a statement at the time, the group explained the reason behind their decision, sharing: “After all these wonderful years working together, we realized that now is the time to pursue our personal goals and solo efforts in earnest. … No matter what happens, we will always love each other as friends and sisters and will always support each other as artists.”
And that they did, despite some early hiccups that saw original members LeToya Luckett and LaTavia Robertson ousted to make way for a brief replacement that eventually led to the group’s final form – Kelly, Michelle and Beyoncé, by all accounts, they remain friendly to this day.
Of course, the trio are the closest of them all,
talking openly
about how important they are to each other in various interviews throughout the years. Which, if you ask us, only bodes well for a future reunion.
