Drone Uprising in Donetsk: Ukraine’s ‘Ghosts’ Shatter Russian Air Defenses

Ukrainian special forces have once again taken out Russian S-300V systems with pinpoint accuracy—this time zeroing in on the Donetsk region.

After previously disabling key Russian air defense networks in Crimea, Ukraine’s elite drone unit, known as the “Ghosts,” has shifted its focus eastward, delivering another blow to Russia’s aerial shield.

In a highly coordinated strike, the Ghosts neutralized two S-300V missile launchers, three 48Ya6-K1 Podlyot radars, two Niobium-SV radar stations, and an older P-18 radar. The attack, documented and released by Ukraine’s Defense Intelligence, leaves a significant gap in Russia’s ability to detect and intercept Ukrainian drones and missiles.

The S-300V system is critical for defending against tactical missile attacks, while the Podlyot radar specializes in tracking low-flying threats—the exact profile of Ukraine’s drones.

This is not the first time the Ghosts have made headlines. Earlier, they successfully targeted multiple S-400 missile systems in Crimea, signaling a bold Ukrainian strategy to systematically dismantle Russia’s air defense capabilities.

To date, Ukraine is believed to have destroyed or seriously damaged about 18 S-400 systems and at least five of the rarer S-300V systems.

These precision drone strikes mark a pivotal moment in the drone war over eastern Ukraine, where control of the skies—and the ability to deny it—remains central to the conflict.
