Hundreds of thousands of stainless steel water bottles have been recalled in the
US
after customers were hit in the eye by the lids and even blinded.
American discount store chain Walmart on Thursday recalled 850,000
Ozark
Trail 64-ounce Stainless Steel Insulated Water Bottles over ‘serious impact and laceration hazards’.
‘The lid can forcefully eject, posing serious impact and laceration hazards, when a consumer attempts to open the capped bottles after food, carbonated beverages or perishable beverages, such as juice or milk, are stored inside over time,’ states an
advisory
published by a regulatory agency protecting people from being injured by consumer products.
Walmart moved forward with the recall after receiving three reports of customers getting badly hurt from using the bottles. In each case, a lid forcefully ejected as the customer opened the bottle and smacked them in the face.
Two of the customers ‘suffered permanent vision loss after being struck in the eye’, states the notice from the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).
The bottles were sold for about $15 at Walmart stores nationwide and on the chain’s website since 2017.
They are silver with a black screwcap lid and measure 4.41 inches by 4.41 inches by 11.5 inches. The bottles have an Ozark Trail logo on the side. But the model number, 83-662, was only printed on the packaging, which could make it harder for customers to identify.
The bottles were manufactured in China and imported by Walmart and Olympia Tools International Inc of Covina,
California
.
Customers should immediately stop using the bottles and seek refunds from Walmart stores. Anyone with questions should contact the corporation.
It comes just a few weeks after
Walmart recalled nearly 9,000 MaxKare Electric Blankets
sold exclusively on its website after receiving 34 reports of them overheating, including two instances of them catching fire and three of them burning customers.
